Alina Kashitsyna 'EMOtoxemia' / Ukraine - Greece

A reality, determined by coronavirus pandemic, is not a new one, as well as an isolation. History makes circles, changing names and details, but not consequences: instead of hospitals and lazarets of the past, today people are isolated in their own homes. Being closed, forced, trapped and controlled, having no freedom of expression and choice, people get intoxicated by loneliness, isolation, and what is worth – by their own emotions.

“Emotoxemia” describes the emotional system of an isolated person. Aggressiveness, pain, sadness, nostalgia, hope and hopelessness are like the waters of the sea that is locked within one single person.

The problem of the isolation space is reflected by the relief of installation: its shape refers to the Greek islands, like those of Corfu and Syros that had the biggest lazarets in the past.

Emotional intoxication, inner struggle, physical and mental illnesses are expressed by the video, projected on the installation. Showing the water that is constantly moving and changing the level and the colour, it re&ects the psychological problems of isolated people, their emotional pressure, periods of recession and remission, reaching the limits and a hope for the redemption that helps them to survive.

The music is a kind of monologue of the isolated person. Sometimes it’s a whisper, sometimes a weeping or an anxious talking, but often a scream to the silence – the only available way of releasing the pain.
